Meet Pastor Wayne Matthias-Long
The Rev. Wayne A. Matthias-Long was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and raised in the nearby town of Shavertown where he was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He and his wife Karen (who is an Associate in Ministry serving on the Northeastern Pa. Synod bishop’s staff) are parents of two adult sons, Joshua and Aaron.
Pastor Matthias-Long graduated from Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa., and from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He was ordained by the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod in 1985 and served as Associate Pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, Emmaus, through 1991. In 1992 he was called as the Senior Pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Reading, where he served until 2002. Since that time he has been the pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Emmaus. Prior to ordination Pastor Wayne served for three years on the youth ministry staff of the Division for Parish Services of the Lutheran Church in America in Philadelphia. He also served as a Summer Chaplain in the Pocono Leisure Ministry.
He has served in leadership roles in the Northeastern Pa. Synod including as the Dean of the West Berks Mission District (Conference), chair of the Bishop’s Conference Planning Committee, Voting Member to ELCA Churchwide Assemblies, chair of the synod Constitution Committee, and as a “peer mentor” to clergy colleagues and first-call pastors.
He is currently active in the leadership of the First-Call Theological Education Leadership Guild for Region 7. In the community he has served as the chair of the Board of Ethics of the City of Reading and is presently active in the Emmaus Rotary Club. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Home at Topton, The Highlands at Wyomissing (a continuing care retirement community), and Lutheran Congregational Services. He currently serves on the Board of Liberty Lutheran Services.
He is an avid baseball fan (go Phillies!) and enjoys music and reading.
