Two new items on the shelves illustrate the diversity of our collection, one a book and one a novel on CD.
Pastor Leah Schade has a well-reviewed new book titled Creation-Crisis Preaching: Ecology, Theology and the Pulpit. Reflecting her commitment to ecological and social justice, it is an inspiring and practical guide for those who want to preach effectively and with relevance on the stewardship of Creation in our current world of climate change, fracking and other damage to the Earth. In this book, she bridges the questions of science, ecology and theology in a way that’s been described as “beautifully written and persuasively argued” (Mark Wallace, Swarthmore College) and a call to “claim the Biblical privilege and power for environmental story and truthtelling” (Claire Burkat, Bishop, Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, ELCA).
The beautiful novel, Gilead, by Marilynne Robinson is available on CD. This Reformation Library Book Club Selection spans 9 hours on 7 discs. It is the account of John Ames, a Congregationalist minister in Gilead, Iowa as he shares his memories of his father – a pacifist during World War II – and his grandfather – a radical abolitionist and subsequently, a Union chaplain – with his own son. As the New York Times Book Review says, “Robinson’s words have a spiritual force that’s very rare in contemporary fiction….”
