COME TO A LIBRARY BOOK CLUB MEETING
The Reformation Library Book Club meets quarterly to discuss a range of classic and current fiction and nonfiction. All meetings start at 7:00 pm in the Alyce Thompson room, and everyone is welcome. No RSVP is needed. And even if you haven’t read the book, come enjoy the lively conversation, community and snacks! Our upcoming meetings and books are:
April 18, 2017: The Summer Before the War, by Helen Simonson. Described by NPR as “a gentle comedy of provincial manners,” this novel is set in a Sussex town just before and at the outset of World War I. As the reviewer notes, “the contrast between pastoral peace and the violent chaos of war is what gives the novel its heft.”
July 18, 2017: Far From the Madding Crowd, by Thomas Hardy. Hardy’s classic novel of late Victorian England contrasts an idyllic landscape with the harshness of rural life. Yet that is just the backdrop for the powerful story of the unconventional Bathsheba Everdene, her would-be lovers, and the themes of love, honor and betrayal that made this Hardy’s first literary success.
October 17, 2017: Orphan Train, by Christina Baker Kline. The novel is inspired by the history of the orphan trains that carried hundreds of thousands of orphaned and abandoned children to the Midwest between 1854 and 1929. The two heroines of this story of resilience are 91-year old Vivian, who was sent to Minnesota from New
York as a young, orphaned Irish immigrant, and almost-18 year old Molly, a Pensobscot Indian just about to age out of foster care. The two women find common ground in
their experience of being outsiders and forge an unexpected friendship.
