Warm Reads for Cold Days, Snow Days
With the polar vortex upon us, how about spending some indoor time letting a book “warm” you or a family member? Drop by the Ref Library some Sunday — our collection is always growing. For example, we have recently added a wide variety of children’s books with appealing stories that can help parents and kids navigate today’s culture with compassion and understanding. For young adults, there’s Katherine Applegate’s novel, Wishtree.
For adults, several new acquisitions explore issues of faith with issues of race and of sexual orientation/identification to broaden discussion, understanding and inclusion. Carolyn Heisel’s Anxious to Talk about It aims to help white Christians speak constructively about race and with those of other races. Karen Keen’s Scripture, Ethics, and the Possibility of Same-Sex Relationships looks at how the Old and New Testaments can inform our thinking today, a more theological approach. And Mihede Kim-Kort’s story of living as a queer Presbyterian minister with a family – Outside the Lines: How Embracing Queerness Will Transform Your Faith – opens her personal story to guide others.

April 16: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, by Mark Haddon.
July 16: The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland by Jim DeFede recounts how the people of Gander responded when the passengers of 38 planes headed for the U.S. on 9/11 arrived in their town.
October 15: Piece of the World, by Christina Baker Kline, which imagines the life of Christina Olsen, Wyeth’s model for Christina’s World.
