ELLINGTON EPIPHANY CELEBRATION

ELLINGTON EPIPHANY CELEBRATION

SUNDAY, JANUARY 26
11:00 AM SERVICE

Join us for a truly special worship experience at the 11:00 service on Sunday, January 26, led by Dr. Jon Pahl. Dr. Pahl is known to many of us as a professor at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia but he is also an accomplished saxophonist. Dr. Pahl will be joined by pianist Richard Mandel, John D’Urso playing the bass and our own Chris Eckert on the drums for an Epiphany Celebration of music, word, and sacrament.

The Epiphany Season (which lasts until Lent begins on Ash Wednesday) celebrates the manifestation of Jesus as the Christ, the Light of the World. What better way to celebrate this season than with the music of Duke Ellington, one of America’s foremost composers? Three of his albums were explicitly labeled “Sacred Concerts,” but all of Ellington’s music sought to remind musicians and listeners of the presence of the spiritual in the midst of the ordinary. Each of the tunes played in this service brings light in winter, from the deep blues of Mood Indigo to the joyous swing of Jump for Joy.

We are very grateful to Dr. Pahl and the other musicians for providing what promises to be an inspiring worship experience.
