So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” – Acts 1:6-8
The cross I wear each Sunday when I lead worship was a gift from my college, given to me at a farewell and godspeed service at the end of my senior year. It is a variation on a Jerusalem cross – a cross that has a large cross in the middle and is surrounded by smaller crosses. A Jerusalem cross is meant to show us the going out, or the spreading, of the gospel from Jerusalem “to the ends of the earth.”
Summer is a time when we are often taken into places away from our home – to enjoy time with family, to re-create ourselves, and to see those great ends of our earth. All the while, remembering, that we are the church wherever we find ourselves. As Jesus told his disciples they are to be his witnesses in all places.
This summer, we would like to invite you to share the places where you are being the church in the world as you travel (or stay in our own neighborhoods!) through a special project.
We will have crosses available in the gathering space outside of the sanctuary. We invite you to take one with you, take a photo of it with you and where you are, and share it with the congregation! (You can either post it to our Facebook group yourself or email it to the pastors and we will post it for you! If you have not yet joined our Facebook group, we invite you to do so!)
Please only take one per family and, if you can, bring it back so that another family can take it with them!
We hope that you will have some fun sharing your faith along the way of your summer travels and adventures. God’s blessings to you as you travel, return home, or rest in these days of summer.
God’s peace and blessings!
