“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” – Psalm 107:1
My family has a Thanksgiving tradition – and perhaps your family has a similar one. Before our Thanksgiving dinner, we go around the table and everyone has an opportunity to share the things that we are thankful for in our lives.
Whoever goes first always lists off several things. When the second person begins, they usually start with the words “Well, all of those things, and…” before adding a new list of their own, causing the first person to chime in with words of affirmation with what has been added. This continues around the table, with each person adding to this full list of gratitude, reminding others of more things that could have been listed. It seems, that, in a way, gratitude becomes somewhat contagious around our table. That, in the act of giving thanks, we are reminded of the abundance of blessings in our lives by others who help us to see the fullness of all that God has given us.
What if we lived each day like this? Calling to mind the things that we are grateful for, the blessing that God has given to us, and sharing them with others. Perhaps November is a great opportunity to try just this! In this month of thanksgiving, what if for each day of the month you thought of something you are thankful to God for and shared it with just one other person? Sharing the people, moments, and joys that our lives are so richly blessed with reminds us, and others, of God’s goodness that fills our lives with rich abundance.
With thanksgiving,
